Depending upon the model, a notebook battery usually lasts from 1 to 8 hours. However, with efficient battery usage, an hour or two of battery power can significantly be increased. You can save battery power by using the built-in battery saving modes and by following good notebook battery-saving practices.
Built-in battery-saving modes are Stand By and Hibernate. In the Stand By mode, open applications are stored in the RAM, the hard disks power down, the monitor switches off, but the processor goes on running. When you again perform some activity of the mouse or the keyboard, then the hard disk powers up, the monitor switches on, and the data from the RAM is activated, restoring your notebook exactly the way you left it.
The Hibernation mode is used when the notebook is left unattended for a long time. The open applications are stored on the hard disk, which subsequently powers down, the monitor turns off, and the processor turns off going in for hibernation. On soft rebooting like a restart or wake up on LAN, the processor turns on, the laptop wakes up, and the same exact settings are restored. Both these modes should be used to conserve battery power. You can preset your preferences in the settings of your notebook, so that in case you doze off, or leave the device for a coffee or a snack, the notebook automatically goes into any one of these power saving modes.
Following battery-saving practices can also save notebook battery power. You should always adjust the monitor controls to suit the room lighting conditions. Dimming the contrast and brightness saves battery power besides providing relief to your eyes. Auto-save and auto-update features of applications start in the background without your knowledge and these should be disabled. External devices consume a lot of battery power, hence the usage of external mice, monitors, keyboards, optical drives, videocam, digital cameras, or any other device connected to the PC Card slot, VGA/ FireWire/ USB port should be avoided.
Increase the RAM memory, if an extra slot is available, as this puts fewer burdens on the hard disk, which consumes a lot of battery power. Avoid multimedia games while you are running your notebook on battery power. Similarly, avoid music or movies. Copy the CD/DVD on the hard disk and play it from there, instead of the optical drive. Disable WiFi and Bluetooth. Built-in wireless cards should also be disabled. Decrease or set to mute the notebook speaker volume. Turn off all preprogrammed scheduled tasks. All unused open applications
should be closed. The general guideline is that when your notebook is on battery power, you should perform only such operations, which are the need of the hour. Rest of the applications can be performed, when your notebook is connected to the mains.
Keeping good care of the battery also prolongs its life. To maximize performance of nickel-metal hydride batteries, they have to be completely drained off before they are recharged. However, lithium-ion batteries do not need cycling/ conditioning, and they do not suffer from memory effects. Hence, they need not be fully drained off before recharging. When the notebook is not in use for an extended period, the battery pack should be removed to avoid battery leakage. Before removing the battery pack, you should charge it fully and then remove it, as all kinds of batteries should always be stored in a fully charged state. Do not store your battery pack along with metal parts, as this will short-circuit your battery.
Utilizing the built-in battery saving options and other means, you can significantly add one to three hours more in the total capacity of your notebook battery. Sometimes, in critical situations, like an important meeting, this extra hour of notebook battery power can help you clinch your desired deal.

Notebook Purchase Review
By Roberto Sedycias
In the early nineties few people could image the impact that notebook would have in the computer industry. Its unique portability made the notebook a product in a class by itself. Soon, it became a must-have product, to those who were constantly moving from office, home or school. Nowadays, it is one of the best selling computer hardware items of all times.
With a Notebook, you can carry your work around conveniently, without having to worry about the myriads of wires, hardware and space needed to keep a desktop. Also, you can choose whether to work from office or home. A Notebook is really handy in any situation.
Portability and mobility are the great advantages of having a Notebook, or laptop. In your Internet search prior to buying a Notebook, you will be presented with a great variety and quantity of information. This can be quite bewildering, so you have to know what features you need in a Notebook.
Upgradabeality is an important consideration: the Notebook you choose now may be the one best suited to your current needs; but in future, you may find it necessary to upgrade it. You will not want to invest valuable time and money in purchasing a Notebook which you will have to discard or sell off in the near future, because of what you might feel as the inadequacy of your current one. When you consider upgradabeality, you have to think of memory or RAM, and hard disk space.
The CPU, or Processor, is the engine which will drive your Notebook`s performance. So you should choose the fastest CPU that is available, depending on your budget and on what you will be using the Notebook for. Tasks like word processing, emailing and surfing the Net do not require a fast CPU. But using CPU intensive applications, such as processing spreadsheets or playing games will work better with a fast CPU.
The RAM, or memory is another important feature, and the more memory you have, the better. Your Notebook`s performance will be greatly affected if you do not have sufficient memory. The minimum recommended these days is 1 Gigabyte of memory. Some experts recommend a minimum of 2 Gigabytes. The more memory you have, the better the performance and multitasking you can expect from your Notebook.
The speed and capacity of the hard disk of your Notebook are important, for this is where you will install all your software and your data (documents,
database, photos etc). Make sure that you have enough room to store all your information which can be readily accessed. 40 Gigabytes of hard disk space is considered the minimum these days. Consider getting a Notebook with 80 Gigabytes of disk space.
Do note that Apple Notebooks are now using Intel processors, which means that if you have a hard disk with sufficient disk space, you can partition your disk drive and install both Apple Mac software and Windows software, and switch between the two.
You also have to consider the screen of your Notebook, for this is what you are going to be staring at, and you have to be happy with its resolution and size. You will want a crisp, bright screen with good viewing, especially for photos. You can go and look at different screens at a local electronics store, and try to figure out which size and resolution you like best. Just be sure that the screen is an Active Matrix one and not Passive Matrix.
The other features you will be looking at to connect to your Notebook are external devices such as a mouse, printer, portable disk drive, scanner etc. Good luck!

Notebook Pcs

Notebook shopping can be rewarding provided you are literate about the various features that various manufacturers offer. Popularity of notebook has soared more because of its portability without any compromise on performance. Since buying a notebook can be once in few years affair you need to be clear about its use.
Following is a condensed notebook buying guide dealing with just the main factors you need to keep in mind before purchasing one.
Buy by features-the core components
The need of the hour today is to carry work and information and instant access to internet to present information for sales and clinch business deals. So obviously the size and weight of the notebook you carry around matters a lot. Notebooks are categorized both on basis of weight and on basis of screen size.
Size
The four basic sizes are:
1.Tablet PCs have all the normal functions. There is the added advantage of being able to physically write and manipulate applications with a specially designed input device- the Pen. The two types are the slate and the convertible. Example: Lenovo ThinkPad X41 2526, Lenovo ThinkPad X41 (S5519073) PC Notebook .
2.Ultra portable notebooks are extremely light with small keyboards and screen. There is however no compromise on emailing and web surfing capabilities and can connect to cellular broad band wireless providers. The CD/DVD drives are removed to save space. Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Ultraportable
3.Thin and light notebooks weigh five to seven pounds. The swappable media bays make it possible to switch between CD/DVD and spare battery. You will have to recharge often else carry the power adapters too. Lenovo ThinkPad X60s
(X60s_Standard_Ultralight)_BT...) PC Notebook
4.Desktop replacements are powerful notebooks, only that you wont be able to carry it around much. Available with powerful processors, adequate memory, plenty of drive space and wireless connectivity. The negative factor associated being comparatively lesser battery life due to power draining screens and the powerful components.
Weight
This feature is crucial since the notebook is intended to be carried around. A frequent flier would prefer lighter systems with some compromise on its functionality. While a home user wouldnt mind slightly heavier systems.
The travel weight specified must include the weight of power adapters and media bays but most manufacturers mention just the weight of the system and its batteries. Check out the models in the following three ranges:
0.6 to 4 lb. Most ultra portables come in this range.
4.1 to 5.7 lb. Thin and light models with reasonably good battery life.
5.8 to 10.1 lb. Desktop replacements weigh around 7 lbs.
Display size
Notebook displays come in thin film transistor Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) models, perfectly flat and just half an inch thick, as they are easily portable. Specifications state TFT Active Matrix Display or LCD Display. If you are a frequent traveler, a good combination of small size and less weight will be easier for you to carry around. In case you wish to view movies bigger displays will well serve the purpose. Check out the three commonly available sizes.
8.9 to 11.1 inches- most of them have smart designs and good battery life, but reduced video quality limits its uses
12 to 14 inches- good for watching movies and for gaming
14.1 to 17 inches- for gorgeous display and powerful performance, so, ideal for business presentations
Display resolution
Displays have another criterion which needs scrutiny before purchase. It is the display resolution- higher the resolution cleaner and crisper will be the image. Resolution is number of pixels across the width and height of screen. 1024 x 768 means 1024 pixels across the height and 768 pixels across the width. Pixels mean the individual dots that make up the picture.
In specifications the standard screen and widescreen is specified with abbreviations as XGA, SXGA, WXGA, WSXGA or WUXGA. The widescreen are fast becoming the rage because the reading space increases more with slight increase in size.
1024 x 768 Small displays 12.1 in. usually have this resolution XGA (1024 x 768), WXGA resolutions (1280 x 800). Larger screens too come with so low resolutions and they are cheap and ideal for budget computers.
1400 x 1050 Many large displays 12.1 and 15 inches come with this resolution like SXGA+ (1400 by 1050) and give very good picture quality.
1920 x 1200 Models with such resolution WUXGA (1920 x 1200) is ideal for making movies as there is more detail in the image and more work space on the display. However a negative factor associated with such high resolution is that the fonts tend to be smaller, difficult to read especially for people with poor eyesight. This factor is corrected by changing the font size in operating system but the correction can have unintended effects on other programs.
Display screens
The screen is of two types Glossy and Matte. Glossy screens have the advantage of reduced screen door effect i.e. reduced black spaces between pixels, thus improving the contrast and brightness of the image. The disadvantage is the reflective ness causing eye strain. Matte screens dont have this feature and are a lot cheaper than glossy ones. The brightness of LCD screen can be adjusted and a lower setting can help conserve power. The brightness is adjusted by adjusting the intensity of the back light inside the panel that illuminates the screen.
Processors
This is the most important feature of notebook. There are types of processors and subtypes of processors. Sub-types being ultra low voltage, low voltage, and normal chips of say Pentium M or Intel Core Solo. Low voltage processors give good battery life. So depending on the ultimate application you intend to use the specifications will vary. Since notebooks cannot be easily upgraded (any upgrade of CPU would require dismantling the system to the core and replacement of motherboard, RAM, and may be add another heat sink.) it will be worth the money if you spend enough for fast processors to satisfy your current and future requirements. No single processor can fit all needs and functions, it may be ideal for single function but not for all tasks.
Processor brands
Two of the leading companies manufacturing processors used in notebooks are AMD and Intel. The processor market is entirely in the grip of these two companies. The clock speed of single core versions of the processors produced has touched the upper limit. These single core processors develop heating problems when multiple functions are carried out. Both Intel and AMD have developed the dual core technology in its processors that has increased the multitasking capabilities of notebook PCs.
Intel uses the SpeedStep technology which senses and reduces frequency and power consumption if power is drawn from battery and increases the same if power is drawn from external source. AMD features PowerNow for the same purpose.
AMD,
Intel.
Knowledge of the processor type will be handy to install the correct packages. Some processor types in notebooks are:
AMD processors ,
Intel processors are Celeron M,
Pentium 4,
Core Duo,
Core 2 Duo.
Processor speed is another factor to be considered. The one you would use for just surfing and as a letter box would be cheaper and slower, while heavy duty multitasking,
running multimedia applications require faster processor and cost more.
1.1 to 1.5 GHz- A do everything notebook processor like creating and sharing documents, net browsing, send and receive mails, write or receive text messages, make phone calls etc.
1.6 to 2.1 GHz the double core processors with this speed give good performance and long battery life.
2.2 to 3.3 GHz The dual core CPUs are the fastest. Programs run faster with such fast processors, they cost more too. Recording videos, playing extremely high definition videos, touching up digital photos, video editing all require fast processors. These fast processors consume more power especially when used in portables.
Memory
The memory requirements depend on OS and the applications you plan to put in use. RAM is used to process the program information. More is always better for faster loading, printing and down loading of your files. Buy the ones that have easy to access memory slots as you would very soon want to upgrade this feature. There are two ranges of RAM available.
128 to 256 MB- this space can manage your daily mails and normal applications
512 MB to 2048MB for improved performance
A memory specification like 512 MB (DDR2 SDRAM) indicates; the space is 512 MB, DDR2 (double data rate 2 synchronous dynamic random access memory) is the memory type, latest widely used one. DDR2 is the new version of DDR. Speeds are assigned by the memory type and clock rating and another method by bandwidth.
Drives
Drives provide the storage for the computer programs. Again this choice depends on how much data you wish to store. Some laptop models come with swappable drives which increases the flexibility.
Drives have three specifications: size, type of interface and speed. Notebook hard drives come in two sizes; 1.8 inch and 2.5 inch. The 1.8 inch ones are mostly in ultra portables, while the 2.5 inch size Hard Drives are used commonly in other notebooks. IDE and Serial ATA are the two types of connectors between hard drives and computer and of the two it is IDE which is more commonly used. Speed at which the hard drive spins also determines the performance. Most notebook hard drive spins at 5400 rpm speed. A higher spin rate of 7200 rpm gives better performance but uses more power.
Following is categorization based on storage space.
1 to 31GB-Mostly incorporated in low cost budget notebooks.
40 to 80GB- Home users using notebooks for photos and videos, in addition to normal surfing can opt for 80 GB hard drives.
100 to 256GB- Most multimedia notebooks have dual hard drives of 200 to 320 GB. For gaming uses 100 GB should suffice.
Battery life
The battery life definitely depends on the chores or tasks that are carried out; some of them being the applications like MS Office, Norton AntiVirus programs, Netscape. Huge amount of power is consumed for displaying images on the screen. The rest of the system like the core-logic, chip set and memory too draws power. Notebooks designed to handle large power consumption weigh more as they come with large batteries and thermal heat sinks.
If you are traveling too frequently go for batteries that have longer run time or purchase two of them and use both of them equally. Prefer the notebooks equipped with lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Check with dealer for battery settings and battery backup so that it lasts long. Normally batteries can last 700 charging cycles.
Check the following three categories of battery run time:
1.5 to 3 hrs-great for viewing movies, video chats and photos at home, viable for budget desktop replacement.
3.1 to 4.3 hrs,
4.4 to 12 hrs.
Notebooks categorized
Business Notebooks
These systems have high flexibility, more durability and security features. Business laptops use stronger materials and lighter cases, more mobility features like lightweights and wireless options. There are plenty of hardware features and software to choose from to configure to your business requirements.
Budget Notebooks
These are available for less than $1000USD with a lot of compromise on speed, storage and convenience. So depending on what you wish to use it for, decide what tradeoffs are acceptable to you. A 100GB hard drive, fifteen inch screen, a DVD/CD combo drive which can be upgraded and connection ports should come within a reasonable budget. Check the following brands in the price range of 162.3 to 912.5 $:
IBM,
HP Compaq,
Dell ,
Gaming Notebooks.
These use fastest processors with powerful video cards, ideal for gaming, has good graphics and faster speeds. The gaming version can be for 3D games, wide-screen HDTV, and video editing studio and for dynamic presentations. While purchasing one consider the graphics, RAM and processors with highest speed. Lenovo ThinkPad T60p (200783U) PC Notebook, Toshiba Satellite A65-S126
Student Notebooks
Must haves are good portability, performance, battery life, light weight. A thin and light or ultra portable should fit the bill. It may be used for office applications and gaming purpose. Lenovo ThinkPad X60s,
Home use Notebooks.
Weight may not be major criteria. You may be using this for after trips video editing, storing pictures, and may be exchange information. You may wish for a large screen and 512MB memory, in a mid-range budget. Consider the following recommendations:
Brand Lenovo,
Brand Toshiba,
Multimedia Notebooks.
These are an all in one item. Serves as television, digital video recorder, mobile DVD player, MP3 juke box, digital photo album. Battery life of three hours so can be taken on vacation but definitely not for frequent travelers. Some models can boot to non-Windows environment to play audio CDs even when the system is off. It will require high speed processors and cost more too.
Buy by Budget
Everything ultimately depends on how much you intend to shell out from your pocket. Following are the three price ranges which will help you select the desired model with desired features.
162.3 to 912.5 $,
937.8 to 1258 $,
1269 to 3561.3 $.
Notebook Vendors
With stiff competition to capture the notebook market, manufacturers have come out with eye catching models, with ultimate performance but on the higher side of the budget. Nevertheless there is one to suit every budget and every need. Check out the following brands:
Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo

How I Selected The Best Notebook Computer For Intensive Number Crunching And Stock Market Analysis
By Peter Lim
Having used a desktop computers and notebook computers that had been officially supplied by the company where I was employed, there was no need to worry about what type of notebook computer or whatever configuration that was required in my work.
So when I finally had to purchase my own notebook computer for personal private use, I found myself facing a myraid of questions. Just what should I look out for when buying my own notebook computer?
First, I found I had to quantify my own needs for a notebook computer. Having quantified my needs, which was to do a lot of number crunching and to perform technical analysis and charting of stock prices online, I found that even low priced models could perform work that was demanded by my needs.
I was pleasantly surprised that my needs did not demand a high priced model.
Secondly, the notebook computer I required would need to be sufficiently light. In the process of identifying the notebook computer, I decided I did not need a subnotebook, as most notebook computers weigh between 5 to 7 kg, with a subnotebook weighing at 5 kg or less.
The standard notebook computer was sufficient for my needs coming with some wordprocessing software that was already installed as part of the package that comes with the computer and with Internet access capabilities. All I need was to install my specialized technical analysis program to monitor the stock prices.
At the same time, advances in notebook computer technology ensured that I had wireless technology and can hook up online at any hotspot outlet. This would allow me to have mobile wireless
access anywhere I go. I could also use a pen drivefor additional mobile storage.
Finally, I also decided that I really do not need to use the provided upgrade functionality for the notebook, perferring to use the notebook for a period of two years at most. This was because I discovered parts and accessories were expensive, and going the way of upgrades to be expensive. Changing to a new model completely after two years appear to be a better proposition in terms of more power, functionality and cost savings.
Having made these decisions, the next step was to go online for a price comparison. Shopping online allowed me the convenience of researching each one of the notebook computer that caught my attention, without feeling pressured to make a quick decision.
There were some sites that allowed the added convenience of comparing different models side by side, and doing so was very useful in helping me to make my final decision on the notebook computer.
If you are faced with the task of purchasing your own notebook computer, the considerations which I have mentioned above will help you in your initial selection in making a wise decision.
I Just Got My Brand New Notebook!
By Vita V.
I recently got a 17 inch notebook, and am quite impressed with its quality.
It is so much better than the old IBM Thinkpad that I had years ago. Back then, laptop computers were big and bulky, the screen resolution was poor, they were even more expensive than now, and the batteries had very low life expectancy. But my new Dell 17 inch notebook is everything that my old laptop was not. It is sleek, low-profile, with hours of battery life, and a high-resolution lcd screen that is just simply a joy to look at.
I put off getting my new 17 inch notebook for quite a long time. I have always found the process of buying a new computer agonizing. No matter how long you wait, the very next week after you buy whatever system you have chosen to purchase, there is something cheaper and more powerful at a lower price and with a better warranty. It is enough to drive you completely batty. Nevertheless, I knew that the convenience of a new laptop computer was worth it, and eventually I broke down and bought my new 17 inch notebook. And I am sure glad that I did. There is nothing that beats a laptop computer.
The best thing about my 17 inch notebook is how easy it makes work on the go. With the prevalence of wifi coffee houses, I can work from my 17 inch notebook from all about town. I do a considerable amount of freelancing, so the luxury of being
able to do all my work on the go, when I want, and from where I want, makes my life almost feel like a permanent vacation. And when I am done with my 17 inch notebook, I slip it into my laptop computer sleeve, and can carry it around me anywhere. It is no burden at all, because of its light weight, and though I occasionally worry about having it stolen, or accidentally damaged, so far no harm has come to my computer. My sturdy 17 inch notebook has really revolutionized my life. Of course, for many people, getting a new 17 inch notebook computer like I have done might be a bad idea. If you are not good at keeping track of your stuff, it is a definite no. You could easily lose your 17 inch notebook computer, along with all of your work and data, due to one careless mistake.

Notebook Compurters" The Perfect Desktop Replacement
By Mike Fletcher
Take a look at your desktop computer. Whether it is a mac or a PC, chances are that it takes up a lot of real estate and could easily be replaced by a versitle, space-saving notebook computer.
Notebook computers make a lot is sense. Indeed, they are now among the most popular of all the models sold today. Whether the notebook is made by Apple, HP, Dell, Compaq or Gateway, it can do everything it's big brother desktop can.... and more!
It used to be that to get all the computing power you needed, you needed a desktop. But would you be surprised to know that today, a notebook computer is not only as powerful but is even more useful?
And with the many technology advances we've seen in recent months, notebooks are now very affordable.
So as you look at that big clunker taking up all the desk space, why not consider a notebook computer?
All the big manufacturers make them: Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Compaq and, of course, Apple computer with its like of MacBook and MacBook pro computers.
First, though, just what is a notebook computer?
A lot of people - even come computer manufacturers - use the words laptop and notebook interchangeably. If you do, that's okay. But the terms are really different. While both are portable computers meant to be carried from place to place, a notebook is generally smaller than a laptop. It gets the term from a sheet of note paper.
And that's a pretty good rule of thumb to use in defining it. A notebook is about the size of a sheet of 9-by-11-inch note paper and generally about an inch-and-a-half thick and less five pounds in weight. Anything bigger than that can reliably be called a laptop. Other than size, there are no other significant differences between a laptop and notebook so if you want to use the same term for both, no one is going to quibble.
Look for a notebook that has at least 512 MB of memory. If you can, get 1 GB. Experts also suggest the biggest hard drive you can find - at least 40 MB, though 80 MB is better. And becaise Internet access is critical, make sure your's comes with a Wi-Fi card. You'll also want a CD/DVD drive - internal, if possible.
There are two classes of notebooks. Notebooks with 12 or 14 inch screens are standard-sized. Smaller notebooks - those with 9 and 10 inch screens and weighing around two pounds - are called ultraportables. Ultraportable notebooks usually have smaller keyboards, don't have built-in CD or DVD drives and hard drives that typically have 20 to 40 MB capacities
Technology has made notebooks smaller, more powerful and much more affordable today than even a year ago. You can expect to fiind a solid, reliable notebook for well under $1,000, with fully-featured powerhorse models listing out at a tad over $2,000.
Notebooks can easily be used as replacements for desktop computers. Many fit into docking stations that hook them up to larger screens, power supplies and bigger keyboards and mice. A docking station at home or in the office is a great convenience.
But so is a notebook. That's why for many, it's their main computer. Taken from home to office to school, on business trips and vacations and - with wi-fi Internet connectivity or PC card modems that patch into the cellular phone network - notebooks provide always-available computing and Internet access. All your files, all your programs, are always with you.
As you can see, notebook computers make a lot of sense as replacements for desktop PCs. So start shopping. Once you have one, you'll be glad you did and wonder how you got along with one for so long.
You won't even miss your desktop computer - that's how powerful and efficient you'll be with your notebook. Happy computing!

How To Deal With Liquid Spills Onto Your Notebook
By ravenliz
It's a common tradition. We are all guilty at some time or another of having liquids or drinks next to our notebook computers. Although the unique marriage of coffee and a laptop seem to be an inseparable pair (been to Starbucks recently?), there is some risk involved. Accidents certainly happen, and the results of a liquid meeting with the insides of a notebook can be ugly!
If you are one of the lucky few to have a Panasonic ToughBook CF-18, then please disregard the rest of this article (The Panasonic CF18 notebook can handle it, but yours probably can't!). However if you are one of the other 99.9% of laptop owners and have a machine that doesn't get along with liquids very well, we have some steps that you can take to save your investment when an accident happens.
Don't plan to bury your notebook just yet...
- Assess the situation before taking action. Is the notebook hooked up to AC power or running on battery? If the machine is running on battery power and is NOT connected to an AC outlet, your first line of defense in to swiftly shut the machine down. Be sure the device is not sitting in a puddle and the power switch area is dry. The quickest method to shut down is to hold the power button until the device powers off. Next remove the battery and place it off to the side. If the laptop is connected to an AC outlet, try to separate yourself from any contact with the liquid. Make sure you're not touching any metal with your body (place your opposite hand in a pocket and check to see what you're standing or sitting on) and then quickly yank the plug from the AC outlet. Then follow the instructions above to remove the battery, etc.
- Now that you are out of immediate danger to yourself, you have the opportunity to care for the notebook. Remove all USB components, PCMCIA cards or any other external device. Be sure to carefully wipe off the notebook and all components carefully and place them out for the drying process.
- Time to play the waiting game. Surely you are anxious to see that your notebook is still functional and your data intact. Here is the good news; providing you did not here any "buzzing", see smoke, notice an immediate malfunction or notice any obvious problems prior to shutting down, the machine is most likely in good shape. At this point you MUST allow at least 24-48 hours to be absolutely sure the device has indeed dried out completely. Make sure to leave the laptop open so air can circulate. If you have a cooling rack, commonly used for cooling baked goods, it might even be helpful to place the notebook on that to make sure air is circulating as well as possbile.
- After waiting for your notebook to dry properly, try powering up with the battery first. If the battery is dead, replace it in the unit and charge it for awhile. For your "first powerup", you will be best off performing this on battery power. Does all appear well? Congratulations and Amen to that! Notice anything funny? Immediately shut down the machine and bring it to an authorized service center.
One simple thing to remember is that data travels between all components in your computer via an electrical current. Once any liquid - even a minute amount comes in contact with any of these components while the unit is powered on, you are sure to fry something inside of that case! Luckily most accidents involving spills are only a minor setback provided proper steps to power down and dry your device are taken. Hopefully our advice will come in handy in case the unexpected occurs.

Gifts For Notebook Owners
By Bill. Jones.
Maybe it was difficult for you to buy the right present for the people you love. But ever since electronic accessories have become part of our everyday life, you just can't go wrong with gadgets as gifts for almost everybody you know! They are the trend of the 21st century and every friend you have will certainly appreciate them. Companies are constantly improving and upgrading their electronic products and we all know that it is difficult to resist the temptation of something that is better, smaller and has more functions than the previous model.
Gadgets are everywhere around us, in our homes, offices, stores, medical offices, government buildings and even in our cars. During the last 20 years or so, our lives were made easier by all sorts of electronic products, like cell phones, pagers, answering machines, digital cameras, computers, coffee machines, microwave ovens. People love to browse the Internet or the stores that sell smart accessories and love it even more when they receive this kind of gifts. They are fascinated with anything that's new and needs figuring out. Maybe the real thrill of gadgets is in the need for discovery, play and hunt.
There is an entire list of must have gadgets that can make precious gifts for notebook owners. Everyone who has a notebook will appreciate a beautiful and functional notebook bag. The best bags are the top-loading ones secured by a flap or a zipper. A good alternative are the rolling pilot cases which offer more protection and are less taxing from the physical point of view. You should also be attentive to choose the right bag so that the notebook does not slip or slide around. It would be perfect if you could bring your friend's notebook with you or if you could measure it off.
Other fascinating gadgets are heat dissipating coolers or pads; they are of extreme importance because heat is the number one enemy of notebooks.
Coolers can reduce with up to 15 degrees the operating temperature, but they decrease the notebook's battery operating time. That's why cooling pads are more recommended. In addition to this, they are slimmer, lighter and easier to carry.
The optical mouse can't be left out from any inventory of notebook accessories. Your friends will be thrilled if you buy them gifts like that. Notebooks usually have touch pads that can be difficult to use. Luckily there is the alternative of using an optical mouse, wired or wireless, that can track movement on different surfaces. Modern mice don't have problems with transparent, light-colored or glossy surfaces. Even if wireless mice are in fashion these days, you should consider giving wired optical mice as gifts to your friends or relatives, because they don't need additional equipment or power to operate and their notebook will not be overloaded.
Last but not least, notebook owners will certainly be happy to receive a multi-device charger or power adapter, even if their notebooks were bought with their own adapters. The reason lies in the fact that notebook owners usually carry other gadgets with them, like digital cameras, PDAs or cell phones, and it would be very difficult for them to carry the charging devices of all these electronic products. This is why the multi-device chargers are perfect gifts for gadget fans!

Notebook Buying Tips
By Roberto Sedycias
Why notebook became so popular? It has been estimated that notebook sales has increased an average of 20% per year in the United States alone. Among the many advantages it offers, portability is one of the main reason people end up making a purchase of it. However before any purchase is made, other features should be considered as well.
Notebook was first made available in the early eighties. Although much heavier and bulkier than today's notebooks, it had the unique portability feature that put this innovative product in a class by itself. Although not much of a commercial success then, it gave the computer industry a goal to pursue in manufacturing this item with better weight, size and performance ratio and making one of today's most wanted computer hardware.
Notebook size has got much smaller, however big enough to make one feel very comfortable in handling and operating computer related tasks. One can find it in sizes best categorized as: 1 - Tablet Pc has the size of paper tablet and weighs no more than 4 pounds; 2 - Ultra Portable is a little bigger than Tablet Pc and weighs around 4 pounds, no internal CD or DVD drive, display of 12 inches or smaller; 3 - Thin and Light is a mid-size notebook, 10-14" x 10", 1 to 1.5 thick, and weighs around 7 pounds, wireless network capability, 14-inch displays, combo CD-RW/DVD; 4 - Desktop replacement is the largest category of notebooks, more than 12 x 10" and weighs more than 7 pounds, 15-17 inches displays or larger, wireless network capability, combo CD-RW/DV.
Also an important feature one should look for is performance. Notebooks provide very close performance in comparison with traditional desktop computers, and should handle all computer related tasks with great ease. Whenever purchasing a notebook, make sure it has the latest cpu model, large ram memory and hard disk space. Notebook performance is directly related with cpu clock, ram memory and hard disk space. For these items, big is never enough.
Another feature one should look for is the dvd player. It can come in handy for entertainment purposes, enabling one to watch movies while traveling. Wireless connection is also a feature to look for in a notebook. Some notebooks feature an infrared port, which can be used to connect a mobile phone. Also there are other wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which allows mobile phone, printers and PDA to be connected at certified public and private network. The ability to have a mobile connection is definitely a plus in today's connected world.
Expansion capability for notebooks can be done thru the use of plug-in pc cards. Although there is a new standard called ExpressCard, which is smaller and faster plug-in card that provides more features for multimedia tasks.
Notebooks have certainly become an item required for one's mobile computer related tasks, whether it is used for public, private, personal or professional purposes. Its portability and small size make an attractive all around computer hardware item. For those looking for mobile computer hardware, notebooks can certainly become a good solution at affordable prices.

Keep Your Notebook Compuer Longer! A Safety And Care Guide For Laptop Computers
By Chris Robertson
Laptop computers - also known as notebook computers - have become an important part of our lives. They are more affordable than ever and as popular as cell phones. A laptop computer has a versatility that the home PC does not provide. With its smaller size it is portable and easier to carry along. This makes it convenient to use in many situations. You can take it to work and back home as well as take it on more extensive travel.
Laptop computers are not just for older working people anymore. Because of its ease of use, more young people are using them for school and college. They can access the Internet almost anywhere and provide updates for work, research, and even games.
Taking Care of Your Laptop or Notebook Computer
It is important to take care of your laptop computer and protect it from accidents. They are designed for heavy use but common sense will tell you that you need to be prudent in your treatment.
One of the first recommendations is to buy a case designed for a notebook computer. These are made with padding to protect your laptop computer from wear and tear and protection in case you drop it. It is not good to carry your notebook computer unprotected or in a purse or backpack. You can easily find a case by shopping online where you will find 1000s of products to choose from.
Another important tip for laptop computer care is to keep food and drinks away from it. Even a small amount of liquid is enough to ruin the delicate components in the laptop computer. It means almost certain replacement, and most warranties will not cover it. It is not worth the risk to lose all your data.
Protect Your Notebook Computer
When using your laptop computer you should always use a surge protector. An electrical surge may not hurt it one time, but
continued surges could destroy it. If you are using a cable or dial-up modem during a storm, be sure to unplug it. Lightening can travel through phone lines and ruin the laptop computer.
You should not leave your notebook computer in a cold environment. This can cause condensation when you return it to a warm area and could cause the circuitry to short it out. If it has been in the cold, let it warm up before turning it on.
When traveling with your laptop computer, be sure to charge all your batteries before you leave. You might not know when you will be able to charge them again. On a long trip, take extra batteries to avoid this problem. By shopping online, you can find the supplies you need as well as other products such as iPods, jewelry, games, toys, sporting goods, pet supplies and cell phones - even free gifts.
Do not leave your notebook computer unattended and do not check it as baggage when flying. Keep it in your hands at all times to avoid the possibility of theft. Don't try to disassemble or repair your laptop computer; this is a job for professionals. You may inadvertently cause more damage by your lack of knowledge.
Shopping Online
When you are ready to buy a laptop computer, cell phone, iPod, or other electronics, shopping online will provide everything you need.

Batteries And The Hp Nc6000 Notebook
By Victor Epand
The HP nc6000 notebook has the capacity for two batteries -- a 'primary' battery and a 'Multiday' battery (that slides into the same slot used for a DVD/CD drive.) When on battery power the notebook utilizes the primary battery first until it drains out, then it is supposed to switch over to the Multiday battery. When the primary battery drained down to zero, all power cut off to the notebook and it immediately shut down.
You have to tell it to utilize the other battery; I'd guess it's the power and battery options in control panel. I don't have a notebook with a similar configuration, so I can't really give an exact answer. Another suggestion would be to see if HP has any special software for the setup you might need.
Are you certain that your secondary battery is fully operational? Do you have access to another notebook like yours that you can test it in? Also is the battery swapping feature hardware controlled, or does it require driver installation and/or additional configuration? Perhaps you could try to reinstall the drivers for the battery interface, if it requires them at all. Also that particular battery swapping feature is probably an HP technology, and issues with it would be most accurately addressed by contacting the manufacturer.
I've got the nc8000, with the exact same setup (primary + multiday batteries), but mine works as intended. My first thought is that the battery might be defective. Are you still in the warranty period? Maybe give some thought to hitting up HP for an exchange, which should solve the problem. In case you were wondering, there are no settings or anything that may be causing this problem. The laptop knows that there are two batteries there, but for some reason the second battery obviously is not discharging properly.
This is where you discover why I don't like notebook computers. Basically, they are over-priced, under-performing, under-engineered and absolutely awful! So, over-priced, well I'm selling 3.5Ghz 64bit desktop systems with 1Gb RAM, 350Gb SATA2 hard disk and DVD writer, (16x dual layer) for around $400. You can't actually get that spec in a laptop, but if you could it would be in Bill Gates territory! To get more than 15 minutes out of the battery, notebook processors are throttled back, a lot! A mobile 3 GHz processor
spends most of it's time running at about 2 GHz.
Under engineered, this has long been a failing. Notebooks are either incredibly heavy like Toshibas or incredibly fragile because the design is shaved to nearly nothing to save weight. Add to all the above, the fact that there is absolutely no standardization in notebook design, and you get a piece of kit that's not only expensive to buy, slow and fragile, but also terribly expensive to repair.
A combo drive like yours for a desktop is about $15, for your notebook, I hate to think, and while it's easy to work on a desktop system, many companies charge a minimum fee of $200 just to look at a notebook.
Right down to brass tacks! I assume your Vaio is running XP? If so, it wouldn't be a drive problem, especially if the drive has not been seen by the system bios. That also discounts any possibility of the cardbus adaptor clashing and causing this problem, however, depending on what you had to physically do to fit the adaptor, it could I suppose have caused a mechanical problem with the drive or it's interface. I feel it is most unlikely that this is any kind of software problem.
It is in fact most likely a failure of some component in the interface that attaches the drive to the machine. That could possibly be in the drive, but there is an equal chance that it could be part of the dock in the system. If the latter, it will probably be uneconomical to repair in normal circumstances, since the machine is 3 years old. In fact, even if it is the drive, it will be touch and go as to whether it is worth the cost of a new drive, assuming of course that Sony are still producing that model of drive.

Do I Need Nvidia Sli Technology For My Notebook Computer?
By Tim Childree
When shopping for a notebook computer, there are a few things that you should consider before making your purchase. Of course, the price is one of the primary determining factors when deciding which notebook to get, however, there's one other thing that should be considered even before you and your computer salesperson talk about price. You must carefully check a notebook computer's specifications see what it has 'inside' so that you can establish whether it is particularly suitable for the portable computing tasks that you have in mind.
NVIDIA SLI Technology
SLI (Scalable Link Interface) is a proprietary technology developed by NVIDIA, an acknowledged world leader in graphics processing technologies. NVIDIA is responsible for some of the most commonly used programmable Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in PCs all over the world today.
A Graphics Processing Unit or GPU is a dedicated graphics-rendering device. High graphics resolution (visual realism) and fast graphics rendering are the chief advantages a GPU has over integrated graphics.
For increased graphics output, NVIDIA has developed their SLI technology, which facilitates the link-up of two GPUs. The SLI application rests on the premise that a computer's graphics processing speed and performance can be increased significantly (up to 2X over a single graphics solution) by combining the graphics processing power of two GPUs. In effect, when the computer user is calling up a 3D image, the two GPUs share the graphics-processing load resulting in smoother performance and faster load times.
NVIDIA SLI Technology In Notebook Computers
It has long been a point of frustration for notebook computer users that graphics processing in desktop computers is far more satisfactory than in
notebooks. That is why the introduction of NVIDIA SLI technology for notebook computers in 2006 was very exciting news for these hardcore PC enthusiasts.
With NVIDIA SLI for notebook computers, two mobile GPUs (particularly the NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7950 GTX), which have graphics processing capabilities comparable to desktop GPUs, can now be bridged for extremely high-speed, high-quality graphical performance in notebook computers.
Why You Need NVIDIA SLI Inside Your Notebook Computer
If you are a computer games aficionado who just has to play Doom, Half-Life, Chronicles of Riddick, Age of Empires, Tomb Raider, or any other GPU-intensive game wherever you are, than you better look for an NVIDIA SLI-ready notebook computer. Combine the power of two NVIDIA mobile GPUs, the parallel graphics processing rendered by NVIDIA SLI, and a high-resolution LCD and you will have intensely realistic graphics and an immensely satisfactory gaming experience with your notebook computer.

Buying The Right Notebook
By Roberto Sedycias
The single most important reason anyone buys a notebook is for portability. This is something that you can take anywhere. If you frequently travel in your work, you need a notebook. If you are a student going back and forth to the university, you need a notebook. If you are journalist traveling the world and submitting articles, you need a notebook. And today's notebooks can be as powerful as most desktops with dual processors, large capacity internal drives, and other attractive features. But which one is right for you? How do you determine what type of notebook will fit your current needs plus allow you to expand for the future?
And the first part of the answer to the question of which one is right for you leads to a half-answer: It depends. It depends on what you are going to do with the computer. Are you going to use it for work or recreation? Is it something needed for your profession or are you a hobbyist? Do you play a lot of games? What level of internet access do you need? It is also important to remember that unlike desktop models, notebook computers cannot be upgraded easily. In fact, they usually have no upgrade path so you should take the time to get exactly what you need in terms of features and performance.
One characteristic of a notebook computer one should consider is the screen size. If you need to be able to have a lot of landscape for projects you are working on then consider a wider screen. Screen sizes usually can range from 10.4 inches to 17.1 inches. If you do a lot of work on an airliner in economy class, you are probably better off with a smaller screen size (because of the reclining seatbacks in front of you). Also a smaller notebook is just easier and lighter to carry around. Some who do presentations with their notebook computers will benefit from larger screen sizes such as those that use the newer WXGA technology. WXGA notebook screens can achieve resolutions up to 1366 by 768 pixels.
Battery life in your notebook computer is very important too. If you move around quite a bit, you might want to consider buying a notebook with not only a long lasting battery (most go 2-3 hours), but also one where buying a spare battery is not very expensive. One very inexpensive solution for the battery problem is to buy an external universal battery that can last up to 3-4 hours.
Another feature you need to consider when buying a notebook is internet connectivity. You will find that a popular way for people to work these days is with a wifi-enabled notebook at a wireless hotspot (such as in coffee shops, restaurants, libraries and airports). If you are buying an older used notebook, you may have to get an additional wifi-card if you want to have the mobile connectivity provided by this technology. Also, you will find that most hotels nowadays offer high-speed internet access but it is usually through a wifi connection.
And lastly, you need to consider what other options you want for your notebook computer. Do you want a CD writer or will you need to record DVDs? Do you need premium sound? How large of a disk drive do you need? When it comes to disk space, CD/DVD writers, sound cards, memory, and processor speed, it's best to get it now as opposed to get it later. Here's why: The upgrade path for most laptops and notebooks is not very long. This is because notebooks are probably replaced every 2-3 years. They are quick becoming just as expendable as a set of tires for your car. And if you do not maximize on memory and processor speed, your notebook may not able run efficiently the new application and game software. The more your notebook is adaptable to software upgrades, the longer it will be an effective tool for you.

How To Compare And Buy The Right Notebook?
By Harris Adam
It's not tricky to be intimidated by all the notebook computers models on the market these days. You can most often get a dozens of price range and models.
In order to find the right notebook for you, a little consideration will be needed. Before go on shopping you should make a decision what actually you need. When you distinct your need, no doubt buying the right notebook is very effortless.
Here we point out 5 basic factors to consider:
1. Dimension
Size is definitely a matter in the mobile computing world. A notebook computer can be affected by two element sizes: portability and display size.
If you are intending that you will be used your computer for just a short time, an ultra light will save you some shoulder strain.
In the other hand, a large display will definitely play a big role while using the computer for a long period in a unique day.
Comparing the displays size of other desktop computers, some notebook computers displays exceed 17 inches these days. The down face is that these monsters can simply weigh three times as much as an ultra light.
2. Hard Drive
The element here sounds the size of the hard drive. What size of hard drive you have to buy? Simply query the following question from yourself.
Will the notebook be my alternative system or a primary?
If a primary then you should buy a bigger hard drive 60 GB or more. If an alternative, you may probably buy a 20 GB.
Also you should know how much data you will be kept in or how much data you have in the present. So simply you should buy a hard drive according to your need.
3. Memory
Determining the right memory or RAM for your notebook need to know the way of for what you will be used the notebook?
If you feel that you will be face up to somewhat mundane - email, spreadsheets, word processing, etc- 256 MB will be suitable. Most often many of notebooks have such configuration, so don't spend a lot for more RAM.
But if you are aspiring mobile digital photographer always stuff your notebook with as much RAM as it can hold.
4. Network Connections
Internet is the most important part of the modern computing, computing in the 21st century rely heavily on being connected: It should be connected to a corporate network, connected to an online service, connected to the Internet, connected to a home network, connected to a wireless network.
You should buy a notebook computer that will be able to access them all.
4. The Price
Price of notebook depends mostly on your budget, how much you can pay for a notebook.
A few years ago, $2.000 were not sufficient for buying a notebook, but today, there are a huge rang of notebooks allow you to pay $1,000 or less for a notebook.
However purchasing a notebook computer is still considered a major purchase for most of buyers. You should compare different prices before confirming a deal. We would recommend you http://computersnext.com for comparing and buying a notebook computer.

5 Reasons To Choose A Notebook Over A Computer Desktop
By Chris Robertson
Many of us are so used to working on a computer desktop that when it comes time to purchase a new computer, we don't consider other options. Today, computer notebooks - which were once called laptops - offer a number of advantages over a computer desktop. Here are just five reasons why you should take a second look at notebooks.
1. Mobility
You might be used to pulling up a chair to your computer, but it makes much more sense to pull your computer up to your chair. Laptops can certainly be used at your desk, but you also have the option of bringing them to the spot where you're most comfortable. Maybe you'd like to surf the Web in the evening out in the living room or catch up on your favorite blogs before bedtime. Notebooks with wireless connectivity can travel with you throughout your home, so you can check your email or do your Internet shopping anywhere.
Of course, notebooks also make sense for those who are on the go. Students can take laptops to class and to the library, while businesspeople can take them along while traveling. With WiFi so widely available, it even makes sense to have a notebook while on vacation. With the right notebook, it's easy to take photos with your digital camera, upload them, and email them to friends and family before you even get back home. Or you can use it to write a vacation blog and include those pictures from your digital camera.
2. Better Displays
The size and quality of computer notebook displays has improved so dramatically that there's little difference between laptops and a computer desktop. For example, you can get Apple's MacBook with a 13.3-inch LCD widescreen (1280 x 800 pixels), a 15.4-inch LCD widescreen (1440 x 900 pixels) or a 17-inch widescreen (1680 x 1050 pixels). Similarly, the Compaq Presario has a 15.4-inch display.
3. Lighter Weight
Just a few years ago, even the lightest notebook was a pain to lug around. Today, though, laptops are increasingly easy on the back. The MacBook is slightly over an inch thick and the Toshiba Portege weighs in at about four pounds. While that's still heavy compared to come of the new ultralight convertibles (Fujitsu's LifeBook U810 weighs only a pound and half), it's a significant improvement over the old seven-pound laptops.
4. Better Computing and Battery Power
Historically, two drawbacks of notebooks were their limited RAM, limited space on the hard drive, and short battery life. Times have changed, though, and laptops now have as much power under the hood as their computer desktop cousins. The MacBook, for example, has 1GB of memory (configurable up to 4 GB) and a hard drive that's configurable to 250GB. This means that your software will hum right along and you'll be able to zip through programs as quickly and as easily as you do on your desktop. Likewise, batteries in today's notebooks don't heat up and don't conk out.
5. More Features
In older laptops, the computer's size and weight limited the number and types of features available. Today, with smaller processors and other components, there's room to pack more features into notebooks. For example, the MacBook has a DVD player, built-in webcam, built-in wireless capability, two USB ports and a FireWire port, built-in microphone, and audio and digital input/output.
There are so many advantages to owning notebooks that, before you buy your next computer, it's worth your while to take one for a spin.

Improve The Performance Of Your Notebook Or Laptop
By Anil878 Chugani878
Improve the performance of your notebook or laptop
Is your laptop taking a long time to start, run programs and load pages on the internet? If so, then you may have some tidying up to do on your machine. There are a couple of easy ways to speed up your notebook or laptop and ensure that it keeps running in tip top condition.
When you start your laptop up, it may be installing and reinstalling a lot of programs. This will all add up and eventually everything will slow down. You can configure your start up in the run tab of the Start menu. You will type in msconfig and click ok. A window will open up and you click on the startup tab. Here you will be shown everything that starts when you switch on your laptop or notebook. Just be sure of what these programs do before you delete them, in case they are important.
One of the more obvious parts of speeding up your laptop is to empty the recycle bin. The memory of a notebook or laptop is not very big and if you are clogging it up with deleted files and items you dont need then you will have a slow system, so dont forget to delete the items that are in your recycle bin. You can also help to speed things up by finding any unused programs and delete them. Part of the scheduling of your machine will be to erase some temporary files that you dont need. This will also help to boost the speed and improve the functioning of your laptop. Many temp files that you get from downloading files from the internet or saving and opening emails will be stored forever. A special program will go through them all and get rid of the unimportant ones.
If you are constantly online, then you will also need to have a great spyware and adware remover in place, because these cookies and spyware programs that get downloaded will slow your notebook down dramatically. This is also something that is simple to do and should be automatically scheduled for a certain time of day. You should perform a defrag of the system files to improve performance of your notebook or laptop. This means that you will be mending the holes that have formed in your files and drives where you have deleted items and copy pasted other items and moved things around. Everything you do on your notebook or laptop will be remembered and holes will be left which slow things down. A defrag will fix everything and boost speed of notebook or laptop.
Boost speed of notebook or laptop can also be achieved by looking at the hard disk drive space on the machine. If you have removed unnecessary programs and items like pictures and music files, performed a defrag and configured your start up then you might need to get a bigger hard drive. This could be the reason that your notebook or laptop is so slow. Once you have gone through this list, you machine should be working perfectly and cause you no more irritation.

An Ultraportable Or Mainstream Notebook Which Is Best For You?
By Jerry Costas
The typical computer user's ideal notebook would fall into one of the two most popular categories ultraportable or mainstream. Ultraportables are pretty and trim, generally weigh less than 4 pounds, and can be carried almost anywhere. Mainstream notebooks deliver a good balance of portability and power. Between the different manufacturers, models, and sub-models, consumers are faced with a variety of notebooks to choose from, varying greatly in price, features, design, and performance.
Performance, dictated by the quality and power of the components, was once the major factor in choosing a mainstream notebook. For ultraportables, performance was not a selling point, because the small sizes did not permit parts that ran faster. Today performance is less of an issue, so most notebooks of either type don't need to be pushed to their limits. Although the gigahertz rating and the amount of RAM included in a notebook are still important purchasing factors, other elements like looks, multimedia features, and cheaper prices are more significant than ever to consumers. Here we'll look at some of the hottest ultraportable and mainstream notebooks on the market, and show how they are selling more than just power and speed.
Not too long ago, notebooks were considered underpowered, poor relations of desktop computers. Yea, they were a great portable solution to moving your work around with you, but nobody expected them to be powerhouses. Usually, buyers found themselves paying a premium of $2000 or more for mediocre components, limited features, and so-so battery life. As far as styling went, you could forget pretty. Most notebooks came in black, or black, like the old Model T Fords.
Times have changed! Now, notebooks have become the primary computer for many people (I am writing this article on my notebook which is my work computer), and buyers demand more. The market has responded, and manufacturers are now offering notebooks with a wide range of features for under $1000. If the notebook is selling for
over $1500, it had better have a high-definition optical drive. Mainstream systems are packed with cool and powerful compnents but now rarely weigh over 6 pounds, while the ultraportable notebook field is bubbling with innovative features, from hyper-thin optical drives and LED backlit screens, to super small hard drives. Design-wise, notebook manufacturers are pulling out all the stops, with curving chassis, innovative alloy frames, and a plethora of color choices.
Mainstream notebooks offer the best blend of features and portability. They used to be 14 inch screen models with limited resolution, but now offer high resolution screens in a variety of formats and sizes. Using smaller components and 13.3 inch widescreens is making the units lighter,, and even 15.4 inch widescreens can be used without going over the 6 pound level. Resolutions are now being advertised as HD ready, where the most generic resolution meets the 720p criteria.
Almost all mainstream notebooks now offer built-in web cams. When is comes to still pictures, webcams give poor resolution compared with most digital cameras, but that doesn't really matter because they are most useful for videoconferencing. Some units are even offering fingerprint readers for personalized security. And today's mainstream notebooks can utilize a single hard drive that can hold up to 320GB of data.
Whichever you decide on, a sleek ultraportable like the new Apple MacBook Air, or a mainstream notebook like the HP Pavilion dv6500t, make sure to get the maximum amount of RAM, either from the factory, or aftermarket from a reputable seller, and you will be happy with your purchase for a long time.

Choosing A Notebook Computer? It Doesn't Have To Be Complicated
By Victor Epand
Notebook computers are the most cozy and stylish form of computer. Many people do serious investigation and research before choosing a notebook computer. The main reason for this is, a computer is not something you want to change every season or year.
It demands a large monetary investment on your part, so it is wise to think fully from all angles before making your purchase. But why does it have to be complicated? Why shouldn't you be able to research information easily? Here, we are trying to minimize your research and queries by giving you some important information regarding the features of notebook computers.
As you must know by now, a notebook computer is like a small mobile computer that runs on a single battery. The tasks performed by it are almost similar to that of desktop computers. They have LCD displays that offer you high quality pictures and videos. But apart from these basic functions, the main thing that must be considered while choosing a notebook computer is that they are generally available under a number of categories. For instance, there are ultra-mobile laptops which are specifically meant for porting. Their hardware weight is in between 1 to 2 kg only. They are ideal for those who have to travel around the world, and like their name, they are ultra expensive. In the same category, there are two types of notebook computers, some are thin and light, others are mainstream computers.
The second category in notebook computers is Desktop Replacement computers. These computers are comparatively much more powerful than the ones previously discussed. These computers
are also meant to be fixed at a particular place. They have a big screen measuring between 16-20 inches. They have limited battery life, but are better than ultra mobile computers in several ways. On the basis of your buying purpose, you should settle on which type you want to buy.
The next thing to do is to select a reliable company from which to buy from. There are countless brands to choose from. This is a product that you expect to last a long time, maybe your whole lifetime. So, you should go for dependable brands that give you a good warranty period and have high quality features. Knowledge about all the parts and accessories of the computer is also equally important. Otherwise, the company can play fraud with you.
While purchasing a notebook computer, you shouldn't just look for the latest design. It is possible that an earlier model has more features than the latest one. So, go through all the features of the laptop. You can seek the help of on line counselors if you feel you need to. Choosing a notebook computer is not a hard task, but it does require you to be aware of all the latest features and gather as much information as possible.

Notebook carriers
When notebooks where made there was no protection for them, people used to carry them under their arms, as they walked to work and back, but then a great thing happened, the invention of the notebook case. Like the laptop the notebook cases that were on sale started taking many different shapes and sizes. When it first started the notebook case was just that, a briefcase for your laptop. These days you can buy notebook cases for every mood you are in. you can get the famous notebook cases made of leather. These come with a pocket on the front where you can store documents and other papers and a pocket at the back of the case. Inside the notebook case you will find space for your laptop charger, and cables, and obviously space for you laptop.
Oh how computers changed. The computer and it operating systems have gone through a lot of changes through the years. The biggest thing that happened to the PC industry is the Laptop or notebook. Not many people believed that a PC this small could do the same as a normal sized PC, but many other people did, and the laptop started taking over the PC scene. Now laptops go on sale for about the same price as a normal desktop PC with monitor, the only difference is that you can carry that little laptop, or notebook with you.
Notebook cases come in all different shapes and sizes, these will match the size notebook your have, and like a 15 inch laptop will have to have a bigger notebook case than a 14 inch. So you can make your purchase according to the size of notebook
you have. Other notebook cases you get will have pockets for many different things, because we all know that we carry a few things with us when we go somewhere these days. So your new notebook case will have space for you cell phone, keys, cds, and many other things that you need with you all of the time.
Notebook cases come in colors and shapes for everyone. You will already know that many people know a notebook case when they see it, this is a good thing and a bad thing. It becomes a bag thing when a thug starts recognizing what they look like. This is why you will not find different types of notebook cases, like denim, and back pack ones too. These notebook cases look typically like mountaineer backpacks, so people will just think that you have camping gear in it. You get denim ones too, as stated above, so that people will just think that you are carrying around a few clothes or even just normal everyday things. We all know that notebooks are very expensive and not many people can afford insurance for it, so camouflaging it within our notebooks cases is very important, so that you do not lose it, and also so that you do not get your notebook cases mixed up with someone elses.
